Dear Friends of Guilford Tech,
Please mark your calendar for the GTCC Sporting Clays Challenge on Friday, May 19, 2017 at Shane’s Sporting Clays. Created in 2014, the Sporting Clays Challenge supports scholarships, programs, and opportunities to benefit veterans and students in our local community college’s public safety educational programs.
The GTCC Foundation invites you to participate in this year’s event by fielding a team or providing a sponsorship, or by sponsoring the entry fee so another individual can participate (a great way to show support for police officers, firefighters, EMS professional, or students who are veterans or participating GTCC public safety programs). Shooters enjoy a challenging 14-station course, the chance to network and promote their business, and opportunity to support a worthy cause.
GTCC serves more than 40,000 individuals each year through five campuses. Recognized for quality educational offerings, GTCC serves as a magnet for attracting business and industry to our region. The majority of our students remain in Guilford County and provide vital services each day that help improve the quality of life for everyone in our local community. The GTCC Foundation was created to support activities that help students gain access to and succeed in their educational goals so they can excel in their education, career, and life. Since 2008, the GTCC Foundation has awarded more than $1 million in scholarships to assist students with their academic and career goals.
According to the National Center for Education Statistics (2003), 80 percent of police, 86 percent of firefighters, and 84 percent of EMTs received their credentials at community colleges. GTCC’s public safety and healthcare departments provide basic and advanced training and skills maintenance to Guilford County’s community of first responders. The college’s public safety, basic law enforcement, firefighter and EMS training helps first responders meet the requirements to obtain licensure and certification. This year’s enrollment in GTCC’s Basic Law Enforcement training and Criminal Justice programs includes 228 curriculum students and 1,438 continuing education students, Fire Protection programs include 59 curriculum students and 1,391 continuing education students, and Emergency Management Services includes 53 curriculum students and 386 continuing education students. GTCC is recognized throughout our state for quality programs and the significant impact our grads make each day through the delivery of vital, life-enhancing services, for students initiating their curriculum studies, and for those pursuing certifications and other continuing education opportunities.
For the eighth consecutive year, GTCC is included in the Military Friendly Schools® list recognizing the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools nationwide that deliver the best experience for military students, their spouses and children. Last year, more than 500 student veterans were enrolled at GTCC. GTCC’s new Veterans Resource Center is dedicated to enhancing educational experiences and providing guidance to veteran and military students who wish to utilize their military education benefits while attending GTCC.
We hope you will be part of this exciting opportunity to celebrate the meaningful contributions veterans and first responders make in our community and join in efforts to strengthen and enhance the programs and support we provide to these special populations of students.
